Signing up for a new workout is a mix of excitement and nerves, and your first spin class is no exception. Spin has earned its popularity because it's one of the most welcoming ways to build fitness: the music does a lot of the work, your heart and lungs get stronger, and you walk out feeling better than when you walked in. The only thing standing in the way is not knowing what happens once you're inside.
The most important thing to look for in a first class is a room that feels inclusive and welcoming. Expect a few butterflies on day one, but with a Motivator in your corner and a clear picture of how the ride works, you'll be ready to enjoy it. Our new riders guide covers the basics, and you can meet the people leading every ride on our Motivators page.
Getting to the Studio
Our studio is at 11653 Jasper Ave, a short walk from the shops and restaurants on 124 Street. If you're taking transit, there's a stop right outside our doors. Driving? There's a free lot directly behind the studio (spaces are limited), free two-hour parking on most side streets off Jasper Ave, and an Impark lot across the street that's $1 for two hours after 5 pm.
Plan to arrive about 15 minutes before class. The door closes right at the scheduled start time, and those extra minutes give you time to check in, stash your things in a free locker, say hi to your Motivator and get your bike fitted properly.
Setting Up Your Bike
A good bike fit makes the whole ride more comfortable and keeps your joints happy. Set the seat so your knee still has a slight bend when the pedal is at its lowest point, and bring the handlebars to roughly seat height or a little higher. Not sure you've got it right? Ask. Every Motivator has helped hundreds of first-timers with exactly this, and every regular in the room was new once too.
What to Wear
You're going to sweat, so pick light, breathable workout clothes that wick moisture rather than heavy cotton. Fitted bottoms are easier than loose ones that can catch on the bike. If you want more ideas, this guide to what to wear to your first spin class is a good place to start.
Shoes, Towels and Everything Else
Spin bikes use cycling shoes that clip into the pedals, which keeps your feet stable and lets your legs work through the whole pedal stroke. You don't need to buy a pair: Look KEO-compatible shoes are provided free at check-in. Just wear comfortable socks.
Bring a water bottle and we'll handle the rest. Towels are provided at no charge, there are complimentary ear plugs in the spin room if you like the music a touch quieter, and our showers are stocked with Skoah products and hair tools so you can head straight to work or out for the night. When class wraps, a chilled lemongrass towel will be waiting for you.

What the Ride Feels Like
Every class runs 50 minutes: 45 minutes of riding and a 5-minute stretch to close. Your Motivator leads a rhythm-based ride through intervals, climbs, races, hover tracks, a light-weights track for your upper body, and recovery moments to catch your breath. Every track is built around the music, which makes the tough stretches a lot easier to push through.
You Set the Pace
This is your ride. Your resistance knob and your cadence are completely in your hands, and your Motivator will give you options rather than orders. There are no screens, no computers on the bikes and no leaderboards, so there's nothing to compare yourself to. The only goal is to be a little stronger than you were yesterday.
Taking a Break Is Normal
Need to sit down, slow your legs or turn the resistance way down? Do it. Breaks are completely normal, especially in your first few classes. The Bikergang is a supportive crowd, and your comfort and safety come first.
About Saddle Soreness
A lot of new riders feel some tenderness in their sit bones after the first couple of classes, especially if it's been a while since they last rode a bike. It's normal and it's temporary.
The biggest fix is a good seat setup, so if you're uncomfortable, flag your Motivator and they'll help you adjust. The good news is that the soreness fades quickly. After a few rides your body adapts to the saddle, and most riders stop noticing it altogether. Coming back consistently is the fastest way through it.
First-Timer Questions
How hard is a spin class?
As hard as you want it to be. Spin works for beginners and seasoned athletes in the same room, because you decide how much resistance to add and how fast to pedal. Your Motivator will guide you, but the intensity is always yours to choose.
What if I haven't been on a bike in years?
That's completely fine. Spin is designed to be accessible from your very first ride, and Motivators give clear cues and modifications throughout. Most new riders are surprised by how quickly it starts to feel natural.
Will spin help me lose weight?
Spin is excellent cardio and can support weight loss alongside balanced eating. At YEG CYCLE, though, the focus is on health, happiness and how you feel, not a number on the scale. Pay attention to your energy, your mood and how strong you feel on the bike.
More Than a Workout
Regular rides do as much for your head as for your body. The music, the energy of the room and the feeling of finishing something hard all add up to less stress and a better mood, which counts for a lot during a long, dark Edmonton winter.
Spin is also a community. Riders get to know each other, cheer each other through tough tracks and celebrate each other's wins, and those friendships often carry on well past the studio doors. Every class you finish is a reminder that you're capable of more than you thought, and that confidence tends to follow you into the rest of your life.
