Spin classes rank among the most popular group workouts out there, and the reason isn't hard to spot. Loud music, a room full of energy and everyone moving to the same beat turn a workout into an experience. Five of the biggest physical and mental benefits of spin are:
A healthier heart
Stronger, more enduring muscles
Less stress and a better mood
Greater mental resilience
A community to belong to
Whether fitness is already a big part of your life or you're taking your first steps toward wellness, spin gives you an inclusive, high-energy way to support both your body and your mind.
What Is a Spin Class?
Spin, also called indoor cycling, is a high-intensity workout on a stationary bike. Each class is led by an instructor (we call ours Motivators) who builds a motivating playlist and coaches riders the whole way through, so the session feels tough but rewarding.
At YEG CYCLE, every class runs 50 minutes: 45 minutes of work plus a 5-minute cooldown. Rides are designed in collaboration with our Medical Director to deliver an immersive, rhythm-driven workout that makes an impact. You'll change your intensity by adjusting resistance and pace, whether that's grinding up a "hill", powering through intervals or sprinting for the finish.
Here's what makes up a spin class:
Stationary bikes: Purpose-built bikes with adjustable resistance and settings you can tailor to your fitness level.
High-energy music: The playlist drives the ride and keeps the room fired up. You can preview the music on the docket when you book online or in our app.
Coaching from a Motivator: Trained Motivators lead every class, cheering you on and keeping your pacing and form on track.
What to Expect in a Class
Most classes begin with an easy warm-up to bring your heart rate up. At YEG CYCLE, that quickly gives way to intervals, heavy climbs and hard races broken up by slower recovery stretches. Everything wraps with a cooldown and stretch to help your muscles relax and limit soreness. Each part is planned so you feel both supported and challenged, whatever your body type, experience, age or ability.
Why Choose Spin?
The benefits of spin reach well past calorie burn. At YEG CYCLE, we focus on whole-body wellness and helping you find balance on your fitness journey. That means community with the riders beside you, time to reconnect with yourself and, of course, a seriously tough workout.
Boost Your Physical Health
Spin works far more than your legs. Expect to feel challenged and motivated, with your whole body involved in every ride.
Cardiovascular Improvement
Heart health is one of spin's biggest payoffs. As an aerobic workout, it strengthens your heart and boosts circulation, and with regular rides over time it can help you:
Lower your blood pressure
Increase your lung capacity
Build better overall cardiovascular endurance
Muscle Endurance & Strength
Spin is cardio-focused, but it also builds serious muscular strength and endurance. Pedalling mainly works your lower body, including:
Quads and hamstrings: Pushing and pulling through each pedal stroke strengthens these major muscle groups
Glutes: Riding with resistance helps tone and strengthen your glutes
Calves: Holding a steady rhythm keeps your calves working hard
On top of that, our programming includes upper-body moves and a weight track with light weights, so you get a full-body workout that builds stamina and strength all over.
Nurture Your Mental Health
Spin's benefits don't stop at the physical. It's also great for your mental wellbeing, and those benefits follow you off the bike.
Stress Reduction
A spin class is a great way to hit reset. Exercise is a well-documented stress reliever, and spin's mix of intensity and focus is especially good at clearing your head. Steady pedalling and uplifting music pull you into the moment, so your daily worries can fade into the background.
Mood Improvement
Spin is a natural mood lifter. Like other exercise, cycling releases endorphins, the so-called "feel-good" hormones, and that post-ride high can leave you happier and proud of yourself long after class ends.
Building Mental Resilience
Spin can be hard, and working through those hard moments builds resilience. Every small win on a brutal climb or race strengthens a growth mindset, teaching you to stay positive and keep going when things get tough, on the bike and everywhere else in life. Having upbeat Motivators coaching you through it helps too.
Finding Community
We want every rider to feel part of something bigger. Training alongside people with similar goals and struggles creates a space where encouragement comes naturally. We call our community the Bikergang, because riding with us means riding with a supportive crew that wants you to feel welcome and inspired. Our classes are built to help you connect with Motivators, fellow riders and the wider community, including through our charity rides that give back locally.

A Mood Lift for Edmonton's Darkest Months
From late fall through winter, Edmonton days get short and cold, and it's easy to stay home and hibernate. That's exactly when a bright, loud, high-energy room can do the most for your mood. Riding with a crew gives you a reason to get out of the house, a dose of endorphins and some social time, all in one 50-minute class. Our Jasper Ave studio has a transit stop right outside the doors and parking nearby, so getting there is easy even when it's frigid outside.
Tips for Spin Beginners
Trying something new can feel a bit intimidating, but spin is built to welcome every level while still making you sweat. These tips will help you get ready and make the most of your first ride with us.
How to Prepare
A bit of prep makes a big difference. We suggest you:
Dress comfortably: Choose breathable, moisture-wicking clothing you can move in.
Pack the basics: Bring a water bottle so you stay hydrated. Towels are provided free, so there's no need to pack your own, and Look KEO-compatible cycling shoes are waiting for you at check-in.
Get set up early: Arrive at least 15 minutes before class so a Motivator can help you adjust your bike for comfort.
Class Etiquette
Spin is a blast, but it's also a shared space. Please:
Respect the Motivator and follow their lead
Keep disruptions to a minimum, like phone use or lots of chatting
Lift up the riders around you with a positive, encouraging attitude
Start Slow & Set Realistic Goals
As a beginner, pacing yourself is key. There's no need to match experienced riders right away. Start with lighter resistance and add more as your comfort and fitness grow. Setting goals you can reach will build your confidence and keep you motivated for the long run.
